On the 5th of March I came across 2 male lion’s on Imbali access road. I followed them off road to quite a large Marula tree. I stopped next to it and these lion’s were interested in this tree, which was strange. Also I noted around the tree all the grass was flattened and the smell of a carcass was around.
Richard then pulled into the sighting; he just finished positioning his vehicle when this one male looked up the tree and before we could even say anything, CLIMBED UP!
Then finally my eyes looked up towards the tree and found an old dead Impala. This obviously was an old Leopard kill that was abandoned. The lion then settled down and started feeding on what was left of the impala. There was now a lion crunching away on an impala in a tree!
While this was all happening the other male was next to the tree very happily eating on the scrapes that fell from the tree. He did not take any notice of my vehicle or that his friend was up the tree.
The Lion then finished feeding and started to climb down with the Impala’s head in his mouth. He had a worried look on his face that said “How do I climb down?” It took him a few minutes to turn around and a split second to jump down and land on his feet. He walked under a bush to feed on his Impala head.
