November Rains

Hamiltons Tented Camp
01/12/2005

After seven months wait, the rains finally came to Hamiltons Tented Camp on the 6th November, and did they come… In a little over two weeks, over 150mm of rain fell in a number of really good showers including a hail storm and a monstrous thunderstorm that almost took the tents away.  Every leaf, shoot and blade of grass in the area is now a brighter shade of green and bushes and trees have appeared where before stood only dry branches and stumps.  The rain has meant the departure of our resident elephant bulls that no longer need to rely on water from their holes dug in front of camp, but has seen an influx of much general game such as zebras, kudu, waterbuck and sable into the area around Hamiltons.  The impala and wildebeest youngsters have started dropping and so the surrounding plains are starting to resemble something of a kindergarten.  Our resident lion pride has been enjoying the fruits of summer with food aplenty for them.  Two of the lionesses have been seen mating with two of the three old dominant males in the area.  One couple were found behind camp and continued about their “business” for three days in the vicinity, him roaring after each successful attempt and both finding some comfort in the cold, wet nights after the rain.

The migrant birds have all arrived back for the summer and camp is echoing with the shrill of the Woodland Kingfishers and the calls of the Piet-my-Vrous and other cuckoos.  Cicadas are ringing from the bushes in camp, sometimes ear-piercingly so.  Frogs and toads are croaking and calling through the night and the whole scene resembles an orchestra tuning up before a big performance.  We wait with baited breath for the real thing…

Hamiltons will be closing for a few days in December to do a spot of routine maintenance and cleaning, and so it should be all shiny and new by Christmas time.  We are hoping to attract a few lost reindeers to the camp, particularly if their sled is full of goodies for everyone!  All we really want for Christmas though is another few weeks of good rains.  Until then, all the best from a green and happy Hamiltons Tented Camp.
